ALMACO refrigeration systems serve the world's largest cruise ships

News

ALMACO has recently been awarded a major contract for the design, supply, and commissioning of the refrigeration systems for Royal Caribbean Cruises' new generation 220,000-ton, 5,400-passenger cruise vessel Genesis currently under construction at Aker Yards in Turku, Finland. The Genesis contract is ALMACO's largest order so far for refrigeration machinery, exceeding the one delivered for Queen Mary II three years ago.

ALMACO refrigeration systems have been selected as first class technology for the outstanding Genesis project. Refrigeration Machinery consists of two separate brine and DX systems for provision cooling plus an additional system to freeze the ice rink. All networks are fed off fully redundant and standalone pack units. Three separate systems will be installed on board: one for frozen spaces, another one for chilled rooms and catering equipment, and a third one for the ice rink. A total of 97 air coolers will cool the 77 cold rooms on the world's largest cruise ship.

ALMACO's contract includes design and supply of all the secondary equipment, such as pumps, air-coolers, tanks, valves, and instrumentation for the systems and the refrigerant recovery unit.

In addition to regular computerized supervision, the new ALMACO control & monitoring system, featuring up-to-date electronics and enhanced regulations, allows the crew to closely monitor energy consumption and provides help with troubleshooting and maintenance.

Between the two giants - QM2 and Genesis - ALMACO has received several contracts (10 ships in total), for the design, supply, and commissioning of refrigeration systems: three Mediterranean Shipping Cruise ships (MSC Musica, MSC Orchestra, and MSC Poesia) and the four most recent Norwegian Cruise Line ships (Norwegian Jewel, Pride of Hawaii, Norwegian Pearl, and Norwegian Gem) built at Meyer Werft, Germany. Just before the Genesis order, ALMACO refrigeration systems had also been selected to serve provision stores and catering equipment onboard three Celebrity Cruises Solstice-class ships under construction at Meyer Werft, Germany.

ALMACO refrigeration plants fulfill the present US public health (USPHS) regulations and comply with the relevant classification society requirements. Our plants are designed in accordance with rules aimed at making the system more environmentally friendly.
